The European Chemical Regions Network (ECRN) has officially joined the European Circular Plastics Alliance. The Alliance aims to accelerate plastics recycling, delivering on the objectives of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the European Green Deal.

Launched by the European Commission in December 2018 as part of the European Plastics Strategy, the Circular Plastics Alliance aims to boost the EU market for recycled plastics to 10 million tonnes by 2025. The mission of the Alliance is to deliver on the circular economy for plastics and substantially increase the use of recycled plastics in new products.

Around 277 private and public stakeholders involved in the plastics value chains have already joined the Alliance to uptake the use of recycled plastics in Europe through voluntary action. As a new member of the Circular Economy Alliance, the ECRN is looking forward to work with other players in the chemical value chain to advance the circularity of plastics in Europe.

The Network is committed to close the loop of plastics to accelerate the circular and bioeconomy at the regional and European level. Several ECRN regions are already investing in innovative solutions for plastics recycling. The ECRN’s role is to facilitate interregional cooperation to advance the research on innovative solutions to halt plastics waste and bring the latest innovative technologies from the EU regions to the EU policy debate.

The network supports both chemical and mechanical solutions to halt plastics pollution. Transitioning from a linear economy to a circular economy will also require the use of innovative technologies. As chemical recycling can treat waste that can’t be recycled mechanically, it plays an important role in the mix of solutions to tackle the problem of plastic waste.
