Exploring how capturing and re-using currently emitted industrial gases could be stimulated through industrial symbiosis – Final Conference of ESCSS Phase II

Phase II of the European Sustainable Chemicals Support Service is reaching its final stage and is ready to share the valuable outcomes of its work. Four Model Demonstrator regions from the Netherlands (Limburg), Belgium (Antwerp), Bulgaria (Varna) and Poland (Lodz) have worked with distinguished consultants (Ecofys – A Navigant Company, TNO, Sheffield University and WAAT) in order to identify region-specific potential for industrial utilization of gaseous industrial effluents (GIE) as feedstock for chemical production, and received advice how to overcome current challenges for investing in their local potential. In order to do that, the regions have used specifically developed self –assessment tool that is now openly available online for all regions. The database of the tool covers the emissions amounts of CO2, CO, NOx and SO over the map of the European Union.

The Final Dissemination Conference of the project is taking place in Brussels on 27 September at the premises of the European Chemical Regions Network (ECRN). This will be an opportunity not only to learn how to operate with the self-assessment tool but to meet regions with high concentration of GIE and discuss what these regions can learn from each other. The 4 Model Demonstrator Regions will share their experience, challenges and discussed solutions, and support other regions to identify complementary lessons from their experience in the project. The European Commission DG RTD, GROW, CLIMA and the European Investment bank will reflect on EU tools that are relevant to the discussed challenges and possibilities to invest in the identified regional potentials.

We invite you to register for the event and join us at the Final Conference.

Phase I of the project (focused on utilization of biomass and waste) was accomplished in 2017 and you can read about the outcomes of the Final Conference here.
