On 10 May, ECRN will participate in the 5th edition of the Just Transition Platform Meeting – Coal Regions in Transition virtual week and Carbon-intensive regions seminars. This three-day conference (10-12 May) will present the activities developed by the JTP to support a just transition in coal, peat, oil shale and carbon-intensive regions across the EU. The event will see the participation of Commissioners Kadri Simson and Elisa Ferreira, together with several other speakers from EU institutions, national and local governments, industry, non-profit organisations, and experts.
Ms. Monika Banka, ECRN Policy and Network Coordinator, will join the panel “Getting started! JTP Working Groups: scope and engagement” taking place on 10 May from 14h00 to 15h30. This session will highlight the role of the JTP Working Groups in addressing the knowledge gap on just transition challenges in regions heavily dependent on carbon-intensive industries (such as steel, cement or chemicals) and the importance of stakeholder engagement in the transition process. It will be an opportunity for its members to present the progress made so far in discussing the focus areas of the transition process in these sectors and the relevance of their work for the larger JTP community.
The four dedicated JTP Working Groups were launched in November 2021. ECRN was selected as part of the first circle of the JTP Working Group on Chemicals. As a core member, the Network co-leads the Group’s activities and the implementation of concrete actions. In the last months, ECRN has been working on the Scoping paper, which outlines the Working Group’s priorities and identifies the key challenges within the chemical sector.
