The 2020 Call for proposals of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking BBI JU is now open until 3 September 2020, 17:00 CET. With a budget of €102 million, the initiative will finance projects working on faster development of new sustainable value chains, ranging from efficient processing of biomass feedstock supply to bringing bio-based products to the market.
The funding supports four strategic orientations defined in the Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda of the European bio-based industries (SIRA): feedstock, process, products and market uptake.
What are the Call topics open for submission?
The Call covers 16 different topics divided as follows: five Research and Innovation Actions (RIA), seven Innovation Actions (four Demonstration Actions – DEMO and three Flagship Actions.
This year’s call also includes three Flagship topics, with a combined maximum budget of €47 million:
- BBI2020.SO1.F1 – Valorise the organic fraction of municipal solid waste through an integrated biorefinery at commercial level. Budget: maximum of €15 million.
- BBI2020.SO1.F2 – Turn lignin into materials and chemicals for high-end applications. Budget: maximum of €16 million.
- BBI2020.SO1.F3 – Produce food ingredients with high nutritional value from aquatic sources. Budget: maximum of €16 million.
