ECRN officially recognised in the European Commission’s new Chemicals Industry Action Plan

The European Chemical Regions Network (ECRN) is officially recognised in the European Commission’s new Chemicals Industry Action Plan, published on 8 July 2025.

In the section on strengthening resilience and maintaining critical production in the EU, the Action Plan identifies ECRN as a key platform supporting the development of EU Critical Chemical Sites. The Commission highlights the role of local industrial ecosystems and clusters, specifically citing ECRN, in anchoring strategic value chains and guiding investments in innovation, decarbonisation, and modernisation.

We are fully committed to cooperating with the Commission on this matter and stand ready to actively contribute to its implementation.

Moreover, the Action Plan acknowledges ECRN’s leadership in upskilling and reskilling efforts through our regional Pact for Skills partnership, which supports regions in managing the green and digital transition of the chemical industry.

This explicit recognition is a testament to the relevance of our work and to the impact of our collective voice at the EU level. It confirms that ECRN is not only a reference point for regional cooperation, but also a trusted stakeholder in shaping Europe’s chemical industry transition.

Statement from ECRN President Guido Guidesi:

“In defining the Action Plan for the Chemical Industry, the European Commission has acknowledged ECRN’s role as a reliable and constructive stakeholder. We remain steadfast in defending the strategic importance of the chemical industry in Europe, while also being proactive in contributing concrete ideas for the necessary adjustments to ensure that European regulation enables the sector to be environmentally sustainable, innovative, and truly competitive.

Chemistry is a traditional sector, yet absolutely essential for Europe’s industrial future. It is the backbone of all other manufacturing sectors. That is why, as ECRN, we firmly reiterate our commitment to keeping chemical production in Europe. We want to do it in a way that is competitive, cutting-edge, and environmentally responsible.

The European Commission will always find in us a determined partner in defending the chemical industry and, at the same time, one who is forward-looking: towards a green, competitive, and innovative future.

ECRN stands ready to support the identification and development of EU Critical Chemical Sites.

Now, concrete action is needed. Time is short and Europe cannot afford to fall behind.”
